Why White Rose
In 2012, Hurricane Sandy flooded Rosa Branca, my parents’ luncheonette in South River, New Jersey. The name is Portuguese for white rose. Our whole family worked there. That night the water came up where it was never supposed to reach, and we ran to save what we could.
I remember my father with both hands on his head, looking inside. “I can’t do it,” he said. “This is the end for me. I can’t start over.”
As the water went out, it carried one of the white roses we kept on every table. A plastic one. I picked it up, held it high, and said, “Dad, we’ll clean everything. We’ll build it again.”
“No, filha,” he said. “Not here.”
Rosa Branca never reopened.
More than ten years later, I decided to open my own shop. I had four or five names in mind. Only one was available: Rosa Branca, in English.
I called my father. “I’m opening a bridal shop. Guess the name.”
The day the name and logo went up, I sent him a photo. “You opened Rosa Branca again, baixinha,” he said. “This time with elegance.”
It took more than ten years. One way or another, we built it again.
